Biography Jan Nijland Jan Nijland (1941) studied at the prestigious Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Here he learned to control all the processes involved in painting, from preparing his canvases and paper panels to making his own paint and making the frames around his works.Painting is both a pleasure and a necessity to Jan. The paint is his means to translate what he sees and express what he feels directly on canvas or paper. This is only a first step, though. The second one is to change forms and colours until, at last, he finds the atmosphere and expression he has been looking for. It gives his paintings a layered complexity that goes beyond the spectator’s first impression.His subjects are love, death and mortality, seasons (growth and balance) and the patterns and rhythm of water. Jan lives and works with his partner Eva in the Dutch town of Hoorn.
