Barry Gnyp was born & raised in the Saskatchewan prairies & wasn’t exposed to much of the artistic world but did enjoy taking lots of pictures through his youth.
In the winter of 1986 a friend showed him a brochure from the Alberta College of Art, particularly the photography course. He knew right then & there what he wanted to do with his life, applied in the spring & has never looked back. ACA opened his eyes to the world of possibilities.
After graduating in 1990 with a Diploma in Photographic Arts he moved to Vancouver, assisted a handful of top Canadian & American photographers while shooting constantly. He opened his commercial studio in 1994 & has since shot for advertising & design firms, magazines & record companies. Some clients include GM, Time Warner, Intel, Microsoft, Westin Hotels, XO Communicatios, Vancouver Film Schools, Plenty Clothing Stores, Outside Magazine, Fast Company, EMI/Virgin Records, Nettwerk Records.
He has spoken twice at the UBC photographic society, once for CAPIC & has taught a fashion photography course at Langara College.
He is published in a how too book called “Outdoor Lighting:Fashion & Glamour” by ava publishing, published in American Photography Annual, Honorable Mention in Graphis, Honorable Mention in PX3 Pix De La Photographie Paris & a combined ONE Show Award.
His work was exhibited in New York in the The American Dream:Swimming Pool Photo Exhibition in 2002 at Albers-Roesch Studio with such names as David Lachapelle, Ellen Von Unwerth, Patrick Demarchelier, Stephen Kien, Howard Shatz, George Hoz, Rafael Fuchs, Pamela Hanson & Lori Adamski-Peek.
His commercial work along with his personal projects that range from the conventional to the abstract are infused with expression of life and art.
Artist’s Statement.
I tried painting but I am not a painter so I try to make the majority of my photo’s look like paintings.
I am not a writer sometimes I wish I was (then I would only have to carry a pencil),
I am a photographic artist. Me trying to give a written analysis of my work would likely
deter ones deliberations, meditations & speculations of it.
I am always open to talk about all aspects of my work.
