Photography as Art ARTIST”S STATEMENT: I have always been a visually oriented person and after training as a draftsman with no possibility for creativity I changed directions and began drawing and painting. Having studied photography in high school I decided to incorporate it into my repertoire, with the result that after only a few years it had begun to dominate as my preferred medium. By the time of my first solo exhibition in 1989 half of the work was photography and five years later the next show was all photographs (albiet in handcrafted mounts and individually sculpted frames - I love working with wood too). A photograph is a depiction of a real subject but it is highly subjective in its implementation, so for me, evoking the mood or feeling of a location and my interaction with it is an important aspect of a successful photograph.BIO: I grew up in Perth, Western Australia where I taught myself the technical aspects of photography in the mid 1980’s. I have been exploring and building new skills ever since and in 2000, after moving to Cairns in tropical north Queensland, I continued the evolution into digital photography with its inherent increased control and potential for expression. My photographs are a point of view both literally and figuratively and I like to gain as wide a perspective as is possible (figuratively but not always literally!) hence my love of travel and the photographic opportunities that arise from it.
