The Artwork of Marine and Landscape Painter Jim Tait Jim Tait sold his first artwork at the age of 13. It was in oils, depicting the Shetland fishing boat “Research”, and the painting still hangs in an office in Lerwick over 48 years later.Since then, his painting has been a profitable sideline to a career in administrative work. Then, in 2004, after a period of unemployment, he decided to take the plunge and become a full-time professional artist. He had his website designed, and has had several exhibitions of his artwork, the next starting in Duff House, near Banff, Scotland, in late June.Jim was born in Baltasound, Shetland in 1948. From early days, his chief interests were the sea and art and, living on an island archipelago sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea, he had plenty of subject matter close at hand. His has been a lifetime study of the sea in all its moods, and his art is a reflection of this.
Lerwick Lifeboat and "Swan" This oil painting on hardboard, by Jim Tait, depicts a summer evening scene in the small- boat harbour at Lerwick. In the foreground is the "Swan", a former sail fishing vessel built in 1900, now restored as a sail-training vessel. Behind her lies the Lerwick lifeboat at her berth. In the background, the Northlink ro-ro ferry "Hjaltland" begins her regular scheduled overnight trip to Aberdeen, passing the island of Bressay as she does so.
