Doug Schwab

Bio I’m a Brooklyn based photographer. My current work is driven by my passion for photographing people and printing these pictures in the platinum/palladium medium and the gum bichromate method, both of which are 19th Century photographic techniques.

I was a self-taught photographer working as a staff photographer for the major defense contractor ITT when I first took classes in photography. It was at this time that I studied with George Tice and Lisette Model.

I hope people see in my work my passion for people and my passion for photography, a simple craft that can be a wonderful combination of technology and self-expression.

For many years I was a Leica enthusiast, but about 10 years ago I began working creatively with view cameras that prior to that had always been a commercial photography tool.

I continue to work with an 8 x 10 view camera, and lately I’m using digital negatives generated by smaller cameras as well. I show my work in galleries and alternative spaces throughout New York City and Brooklyn where I am an Assistant Professor of Photography at Brooklyn College.

It has also been my great pleasure to assist Robert Gurbo and the Estate of Andre Kertesz in the production of two books on Kertesz's work, "Andre Kertesz: The Polaroids," and "Andre Kertesz: On Reading." My role was that of pre-press digital editor. Both books are published by W. W. Norton.

Sara Moire This is a little gem, about 4.5 x 6 inches. Printed in the palladium process on hand coated cotton rag paper, palladium prints are highly archival and should last as long as the paper they are printed on.

All my prints are signed and frequently annotated on the back and are delivered in museum board over mattes.
