Richard Altman

Richard Altman "For me, it's all about design. My pieces capitalize on the unique qualities of glass to transmit, reflect, and project light. The work is made to interacts with surrounding surfaces through shadow, color, and design."

Contemporary style, soft colors, texture, and dramatic design are the hallmarks of Richard Altman's glass art.

An Indiana native, Altman creates stunning visual effects using a combination of glass fabrication techniques, including fusing, kiln carving, casting, torchworking, and sandblasting.

A strong advocate for technology in the creative process, Altman uses computer- controlled heating cycles to achieve the precise texture finishes he desires.

Altman's art career spans 30 years and encompasses a variety of experiences, throughout which two things have remained constant. One is his innovation and creative use of technology and materials to create his works. (Indeed, his fascination with and successful use of technology over the years have prompted some to refer to him as "Renaissance Man.")

The other constant is his interest in light. Altman is inspired by the relationships between the light, shadow, color, and texture in the natural world. This interest is reflected in many of his pieces.

Featured Art Work

Desertscape 2 The Desertscapes Series is inspired by the subtle tones and textures found in the Deserts of the Southwest. A variety of glass components and colors are selected and specially fused to create these abstract glass landscapes. Each Desertscape has its own unique surface design. The surface design gives the work a unique dimensionality and a playful platform to transmit and reflect light. The result is a multi-colored glow that changes with the ambient light in your environment, like it does in the desert. The Desertscape Sculptures are supported by solid metal stands painted with their own subtle texture.
