About This Artwork
"THE SPEARMAN & SOUTH GRANT PARK COMMISSIONER'S MEMORIAL" is drawn with soft ebony and 2B-leaded technical pencils and took six months to finish in 1990. "The Spearman" is one of two Grant Park equestrian sculptures on Michigan Avenue at Congress Boulevard, that welcome the visitor to the park and Buckingham Fountain.

The set of equestrian drawings was suggested by a friend after the Wrigley/Tribune drawing and Michigan Avenue Bridge Sculptures were completed. Upon the suggestion,
his memory had recollected postcards and other published images to be of only minimal artistic interest. But once at the site, the commissioner's monuments behind the statues (which he had never noticed before) created a very dramatic arrangement.

As realist, black and white art, composition is a paramount aspect of this piece. Position creates diagonals. Shading gives form to object. So, well juxtaposed objects and shading give dimension and eye movement that reduce static vertical and horizontal lines. Then hopefully, a good work of art will be the result.

A step ladder was used to check subtle changes in juxtaposition of the statue to
the memorial behind it. Standing on the ladder lowered the statue in relation to
the memorial and created a compositional diagonal at the top. Unity was strengthened by 1) moving to where the horse's tail overlapped the monument, and 2) encircling the drawing subjects with one continuous, thick line. The chain-linked pylons were photographed standing on the ground in the same spot. This strong foreground diagonal gives the eye the ability to easily move in and out of the drawing.

The two Grant Park equestrian sculptures are located at Michigan Avenue
and Congress Boulevard and welcome the visitor to the park and to the newly renovated Buckingham Fountain.

FYI: Contrary to urban myth, both copper indians are intact and appear exactly as they are when they were originally cast in 1926, minus the bluegreen patina, which was painted brown. The sculptor is Ivan Mestrovic.
