About This Artwork
The plaque reads as follows:
"DEFENSE - Fort Dearborn stood almost on this spot. After an heroic defense in eighteen hundred and twelve, the garrison together with women and children was forced to evacuate the fort. Led by captain Wells, they were butally massacred by the indians. They will be cherished as martyrs in our early history. Presented to the city by William Wrigley Jr., 1928
"Defense" sculpture on the northeast corner bridgehouse of the Michigan
Avenue Bridge is one of four sculptures commissioned in 1927 by the City of
Chicago, the B.F. Ferguson Monument Fund, and William Wrigley Jr. The other three sculptures are "The Pioneers", The Discoverers", and "Regeneration". The sculptor is Henry Hering, who also carved the four Natural Science Angels on the exterior of the Field Museum.
