With so many beautiful, vine-covered limestone buildings on the campus of the University of Chicago, the artist had been asked by many students and graduates if he had ever drawn anything of their beloved school. In 2001, after a few years of saying “no,” Mr. Nixon thought he’d better start scrounging around the Midway to find something good to draw.

After looking over the campus for something special, he felt he couldn’t have been luckier in finding this hidden sculpture. Jack’s first reaction when he saw Abbott Hall Memorial from a distance was “Hey, this building looks really interesting.” And when he got closer, it was “there it is! You guys will finally have a drawing.” And what a power packed little ornament it is too. The snakes and ivy (they kind of look like bay leaves, but your guess is as good as mine) turn what would normally be just another simple, chiseled crest into an extremely intricate and interesting mass of detail and texture. Mr. Nixon wished every campus of higher education had the historic, Gothic architecture of the U. of C.

FYI: The first limestone-clad building from the 1890's copies towers, spires, cloisters, and gargoyles. By 1910, the University had adopted the coat of arms that bares the rising phoenix and the Latin motto “Crescat Scientia Vita Excolatur” (Let knowledge increase so that life may be enriched.)

Artistically, Mr. Nixon has updated the phoenix slightly and changed the squarish shape of the drawing to give the image a more pleasing vertical proportion.

PS. I’ll bet 99% of all the visitors, students, faculty, and university employees have never noticed this little gem.
