About This Artwork
THE ALLERTON CROWNE PLAZA GRIFFINS, Chicago, Illinois.... Framed -$750.00
500 Large Lithograph Prints 15 x 18" $20.00
701 N. Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. Designed by architects Murgatroyd & Ogden with Fugard & Knapp. Built in 1924, the Allerton Hotel is a beautiful example of 14th and 15th century North Italian Renaissance architecture. The tower-like design of the 25 story hotel, along with its monolithic red brick surface, combine to make it one of the most distinctive buildings of the era. The Allerton stands out from other high-rises of the period with its rugged, warmly colored, and picturesque brickwork.
The hotel's exterior is also characterized by its first three floors of gray Indiana
limestone, which contrasts greatly from the main body of brick. These floors are replete with round arched windows and doorways, carved column capitals, and balustrade balconies. The hotel's carved stone griffins and winged animals with human heads, called harpies, are particularly interesting details that create a luxurious atmosphere for the individual walking along Huron Street and Michigan Avenue.
The enclosed griffins were drawn with ebony and 2B leaded technical pencils on parchment. This offset lithograph print is reproduced to the actual size of the original.
