About This Artwork
This trip to Pakistan was like falling down a rabbit hole with Indiana Jones. It was in 1996 and a peaceful time for that country. We traveled on the Karakorum Highway, one of the most beautiful (in a strange way) rides on earth. Crossing the towering Karakorum Mountains ,where the borders of China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan converge. We drove the winding highway to its highest point , 15,800 feet, at the Kunjerab Pass, the fable "Roof of the World". This great mountain ranges of central Asia, the Hindu Kush and the Pamir, form the mighty backbone of the Asian continent.
This painting that depicts three men looking into the Indus River was at the village of Karimabad. This painting was referenced from a photo I took while crossing a bridge. The village is surrounded by towering snowcapped mountain peaks some as high as 25000 feet. The melting snow on these mountains feed into the Indus River and is used by the population to irrigate their fields and water their livestock. All the villages along this highway are very remote from the Islamabad and very self containing. They are run by individual warlords and at this time were not under any control of the Pakistan government.
