About This Artwork
Oil painting on wood panel; 24x36 with a simple 2 inch black frame.
This painting has dual themes. It is a classic white still life painting - using white objects to show luminosity and subtle color passages. This unusual setting has two lamps shining light on the still life and a mirror reflecting the scene.
The second or minor theme is a twist on the Vanitas concept which uses a skull to symbolize the inevitability of death. In this painting the skull is from a javelina, common to the southwest. The javelina, like so many native animals, is facing loss of habitat and food supply due to encroaching human population.
This painting is from my Luminous Object series of work. It has been part of a solo exhibition at West Valley Art Museum as well as other venues.
