About This Artwork
When I first started to build my art portfolio, I stored my finished pieces underneath the pages of a desk blotter pad. Then, when I was away from home on a business trip, my family (while working on craft project) used that pad as protection under their Exacto knives. I came home to slices in my artwork. At first I was pretty upset, but then I noticed that some of the cuts created a pointed scale or feather shape, and a whole new idea in approach was born. It first started with cuts in my artwork being filled in with paper collaged to the back.
I think when freed from specific intent our minds are compelled to reflect archetypal ideas and imagery. There are moments in my office work day when I feel inspired to create simple line drawings. Rather than my usual geometric doodles created with precision in the margins of note papers, I put down free flowing curving lines that are seemingly random. However, eventually I see a pattern that is reminiscent of land formations, water, or sky.
