About This Artwork
The north facade of The Chicago Board of Trade, seen from LaSalle Street is one of the most recognizable buildings in the country. With its warm, textured limestone exterior, sculptured features, and Art Deco style, its presence has symbolized stability, endurance, and trust in a quickly changing and sometimes chaotic financial world. Along with the Water Tower, Wrigley and Tribune buildings, Art Institute, etc., The Board has become a regular stop with Chicago walking-tour docents as a significant and classic architectural site.
The most problematic aspect of beginning a good drawing of the Board of Trade's north fascade is that it faces north. To give form to a building's features and to capture it in dramatic three dimension, clear bright sunlight is required to cast distinct shadows. With the sun's yearly arch in the sky, there are only three weeks of summer when light actually shines on the north side of the any building. Usually, cloudy, hot, hazy days near the summer solstice can cut weeks of sharp shadow from bright sunlight to only a few days of bright sunlight. Planning, patience, working batteries, and the luck of a brief cool front from the north or northwest are of utmost necessary to photograph the very fleeting "north season." To make matters worse, the Sears Tower, west of the Board of Trade, also obstructed the afternoon summer sun. This allowed Mr. Nixon only one hour a day, for two days, to photograph the building. For well defined shadows, the building received two clear afternoons of bright, crisp sunlight in June of 1995.
