About This Artwork
The back side or river view of the Civic Opera Building thrust its massive Indiana limestone walls upon Mr. Nixon's eyes every time he came into the Loop from the MetraTrain Station on west Madison Street. Every time he crossed the river, he would tell himself "someone has to artistically capture that incredible field of weathered textures" -- knowing no one but himself would ever illustrate it in a serious manner.
This drawing is an attempt to honor a simple utilitarian facade that has a very positive effect on Chicago's urban environment. "Architecture is the art that defines our daily sensibilities more than any other. Warm, natural materials and elements of draftsmanship in ornament bring value to our surroundings. As we build structures with few elements that celebrate or reflect our own humanity, we have grown to appreciate older buildings that relate more to us". This second illustrative masterpiece, begun in 1991, captures the building's textured stone facade as a two-dimensional quilt of tones. There is a very strong visual relationship between the mottled limestone blocks and the tonal effects of the windows. With totally different materials, the visual effects are similar.
For the artist to draw in his studio, photographs were taken with a powerful 500mm lens. To guide the artist, a collage of 100 3 x 5" prints was assembled. one solid month was needed to outline the Civic's structure. The drawing's completion was postponed early in its production and its unveiling changed Mr. Nixon's drawing style. Unfinished drawings and prints have shown to be of more interest to the general public, and he has since loosened his realist style for the public's taste.
