About This Artwork
The Civic Opera House Portico is situated at the southeast corner of the Civic Opera Building in Chicago, Illinois. The Civic Opera Building is a massive and majestic 45-story office tower with two 22 story wings. Sporting a beautiful limestone exterior, it’s the grande dame of Wacker Drive and the west Loop. The distinguishing architectural feature of the building frontage is the colonnaded sidewalk and matching porticos that span the entire length of its base - which runs a full block between Madison and Washington Streets. At the south end, large bronze doors open to the impressive foyer of the Civic Opera House, whose gilt cornices glitter beneath the sparkling lights of Austrian crystal chandeliers and elaborately stenciled ceilings. The magnificent space features a floor and wainscoting of pink and gray Tennessee marble, and fluted Roman travertine columns and pilasters. The forty-foot high columns are topped with carved capitols covered in gold leaf.
The portico is done in the French Renaissance Revival style and was inspired by the Paris Opera House. The enclosed drawing of the portico is an abridged print of a larger drawing, which includes a portion of the colonnaded frontage. The artist chose not to include the colonnade for aesthetic reasons. Architects: Graham, Anderson, Probst, and White.
The Civic Opera House is home to the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Originally founded as the Lyric Theater of Chicago and renamed in 1956, the Lyric Opera is recognized internationally as one of the truly great opera companies of our time. It's artistic standards are universally admired, and the company's finances, and large subscription base are the envy throughout the field. Lyric Opera purchased the Civic Opera House and adjacent backstage spaces in 1993. Lyric simultaneously launched a 100 million capitol campaign to finance the renovation of the 3400 seat, Art Deco style house. In 1996, the House was renamed the Artis Krainik Theatre for her wonderful directorship from 1981-1997.
Drawn in 1998, the image was first captured with numerous photographs early on a quiet Sunday morning, to capture shadows created by bright, crisp sunlight.
