About This Artwork
Kashgar is a small city in the Xinjiang-Uygur Autonomous Region. It was once known as a great trading center . Kashgar goes back to the 11th century when caravans brought silk from China to Rome. Kashgar was the center of the Silk Road.
Wandering through the maze of alleys, shops and stalls that cover the market area, a celebration of local life defies description.
This may be China, however, the people of this area are called "Uygurs" and practice the Muslim religion . They immigrated to this area during the time when the trade routes opened up. They are not related to Hans Chinese. Their decedents are from Turkistan. Today they are fighting the Chinese government for their independence.
