About This Artwork
A Limited Original of 50
There are times when nature gives you everything you need for a great photograph. The light is perfect, the scene is perfect, and the composition allowed is perfect. When everything comes together to express my true emotions and/or feelings, nothing more needs to be done to convey those feelings in my images.
These moments are few and far between, but on this December afternoon at the White Sands National Monument in Alamogordo, New Mexico, I experienced that moment for the first time in my career. It was late afternoon and the snow white desert sands stretched as far as the eye could see. My companions had disappeared over the dunes and I found myself totally alone with my thoughts and nature. I had been shooting for awhile when my telephoto lens stopped working for no apparent reason. The sun was beginning to set and I was in total panic. I rushed back to the car to get another lens and discovered that it was locked and my nowhere to be seen friends had the keys.
Fortunately, I had a wide angle lens in my pocket. You have to understand that I had NEVER used a wide angle lens and had NO idea what to do with it and it was only fate that I had it in my possession. As I rushed back to my position, this cottonwood tree appeared out of nowhere. It, of course, had been there all the time, I just hadn’t noticed it. The snow white sand was already beginning to reflect the golden light of the setting sun. In a matter of a very few minutes, everything came together and the result was “Cottonwood” which was also the first time in my career that I thought maybe I had some talent.
