About This Artwork
Inscribed "Theodore Thomas Orchestra Hall" in 1904 for the Orchestra's first conductor and founder, the Hall is home to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Chorus. Residing on the southeast edge of Chicago's Loop at 220 South Michigan Avenue, this beautiful neoclassic Georgian structure was designed by Daniel H. Burnham as a permanent space for the city's finest musicians.
The original pencil drawing was produced on Stonehenge paper and is 30 x 34" in size. For proportion and reference, architectural elevation plans were borrowed from the firm of Skidmore Owings, and Merrill. Details of the exterior were photographed on location across Michigan Avenue, on the grounds and rooftop of the Art Institute of Chicago. The drawing was produced with ebony pencils and 2B leaded technical pencils. The Orchestra Hall drawing required six solid weeks of work and was produced in the fall of 1998.
