The United States of America Opening Ceremonies of the 1994 World Cup Soccer Tournament was very well timed and was very well situated for this historic print. Geographically positioned in the center of the country, the city of Chicago was an ideal place to welcome the final twenty-four teams and their loyal countrymen.Few venues in the world exist in a temperate climate, on a warm, fresh-water inland sea, by a world-famous urban park. The piece de resistance is celebrating the event in one of the oldest and most beautiful stadiums in North America.

With its neoclassic architectural motif, drawing its facade had been considered by the artist for two years independent of the coming event. But alone, a drawing of the venue did not have the graphic power to make it a well received lithograph. An announcement of the opening ceremonies in the winter of 1993 by the City of Chicago immediately galvanized Mr. Nixon's imagination. The potential for pageantry, team symbols, and other graphic additions to the long Doric colonnade could create a wonderful piece of art for publishing.

Having played organized soccer in his youth and being emotionally drawn into the international flavor of world competition, researching the history of the World Cup for many months was a lot of fun. It also gave him a better appreciation for the game and its meaning to 9/lOths of the world's population.
