About This Artwork
Found in the Pacific between southern Japan, New Guinea and northeastern Australia, these well camouflaged fish harbor venomous dorsal spines which are supplied by a venom sac. These animals are solitary and live on or near the ocean bottom, where they walk on their pectoral and pelvic fins and hunt other fish and crustaceans. This photograph was taken in the Eastern Fields of Papua New Guinea, a submerged coral atoll 170 km southwest of Port Moresby. This remote region has no surrounding islands. The lack of runoff and the rich nutrient currents afford fabulous visibility, vibrant coral, and abundant biodiversity. This image was published in Asian Diver magazine; it is mounted on foam core, matted and framed.
