About This Artwork
Easily recognized by their elongate silvery body, pointed heads and long knife-like teeth, these fish are voracious predators of other fish. They are usually solitary and are active diurnally. While they are often curious and can inflict serious wounds, unless provoked, great barracuda are usually not dangerous in clear water. In the tropical Atlantic, these fish frequent harbor ciguatoxin, a collection of toxic substances which originate in certain species of microplankton or dinoflagellates. These toxins can concentrate as they move up the food chain, but their adverse effects – both gastrointestinal and neurologic – appear limited to man. The image is mounted on foam core, matted and framed.
