About This Artwork
My mother is an accomplished amateur horticulturist that would put many professionals to shame, her gardens spanning over eight acres of open areas, ponds, woods and marshlands. I visit my parents in Bedford, New York at least every other summer and I never tire of photographing my mother’s flowers, outdoor vignettes, and crafted environments. In the end, my favorite images are those of the flowers in black and white. When the color is taken away I’m left with a study of subtle shapes and textures that never fail to draw me in.
I don’t know the heritage of clematis, but, to me, it has a prehistoric look much like a venus flytrap. The petals are simple and large and the stamens are bent fingers coaxing me in. So I took an almost Pictorialist approach, softening the pixels and embracing the slightly grainy texture of the shadows.
