About This Artwork
"Owl Eye" was taken just outside the town of Mindo, Ecuador. This specie of butterfly known as "Caligo" is commonly called "Owl Butterflies" after the huge eyespots on their wings. Known as automimicry, these "eyes" are meant to scare off their natural predator, small lizards.
