For over 100 years, two great bronze lions have stood guard on either side of the
main entrance to the Art Institute of Chicago, and have become the most iconic and well recognized symbols of both the museum and the City. Located at the intersection of Michigan A venue and Adams Street in downtown Chicago, these sculptures are called "On the prowl" and "Defiance" for their powerful and subtly individual postures.
Portrayed as guardians, lions have an ancient history. Their fierceness, strength, and grace led the earliest rulers to adapt them as symbols of royalty and guardianship. The Lion Gate at Mycenae (1300 B.C.), the striding lions on the walls of Babylon (500 B.C.), and Emperor Asoka's lion columns in India (240 B.C.) are only a few examples.
The bronze lions were sculpted by Edward L. Kemeys in 1894, the most noteworthy American naturalist of the late 19th century. They were commissioned for the steps of the Art Institute by Mrs. Henry Field in memory of her husband. She requested this after admiring the great animal bronzes placed around the Palace of Fine Arts (now the Museum of Science and Industry) and the fairgrounds of the World's Columbian Exhibition of 1893. Lions were among the numerous sculptures that included bears, panthers, elk, and bison.
The two lions were drawn with their front and side views and have been published both as separate prints and in combination. The row of flags presented in "On the Prowl" depict the flags of the State of Illinois, The City of Chicago, the County of Cook, and America's Stars and Stripes, respectively. The other graphic, or legend, above "Defiance" is a measure in feet.
