About This Artwork
Sea fans are large coral colonies, easily recognized by their characteristic fan shape. The fan’s central skeleton is composed of “gorgonin”, a flexible, horny substance which forms the coral’s central skeleton and supports its branches. Sea fans typically grow perpendicular to the current in order to maximize their ability to filter plankton. The sea fans pictured here were photographed in the Eastern Fields of Papua New Guinea. Given the Eastern Field’s remarkably clear water and rich nutrient upwellings, large fans such as these are found at unusual depths. This image was published in Asian Diver magazine. It is mounted on foam core, matted and framed.
