About This Artwork
This photograph was taken in Papua New Guinea’s Milne Bay, at the country’s Southeastern tip. Milne Bay features numerous dive attractions including shipwrecks, pristine coral reefs, caves, and numerous fish species. Soft corals are some of the most spectacular organisms found on reefs. Adorned with brilliant colors and unusual delicate shapes, they may grow to over a meter tall. Since they lack the algae typically found in hard corals (zooxanthellae), they must filter the water for microplankton and dissolved nutrients. Although they are usually photographed when inflated with water, they often deflate to a small spiny lump on the ocean bottom. Microscopic examination is necessary to speciate these animals. This image is mounted on foam core, matted and framed.
