About This Artwork
This is an oil painting of a local waterfall scene. I was attracted to the lush green trees silhouetted against the brilliant blue New England sky. The red roof of the house is a colorful foil against the varied shades of green and provides a solid edifice against the soft terrain. The waterfall is an abrupt change that draws us into an almost violent crash of water against the solid rocks. I enjoy the challenge of recording how the water flows over the solid rocks and moves our eyes into the foreground. The rocks and boulders reflect the brilliant sunlight and provide a hard contrast to the soft foliage of the trees. The cooler cast shadows on the left of the picture suggest rocks and boulders that flow to the right and become far more vivid in the sunlight.

The scene suggests two worlds in one; the foreground representing a sense of hardness, ruggedness and challenge in relationship to a sense of quiet and rest in the upper third of the painting.
