Traditional Photography Welcome to my Studio.

I create emotions, feels and memories through fine art photography, presenting my surroundings, not as the lens captures it, but as I see, feel and experience it, an endless array of colors, lines, shapes and designs.

All my work is printed in studio on fine art matte paper using pigminted inks to insure the highest quality work that will last well beyond 100 years. Each is hand-signed directly on the image and comes with a signed Certificate of Authority showing number, date created and date printed.

I have three distinct styles of photography which I will present here in my studio. The first is a traditional style.

There are times when nature gives you everything you need for a great photograph. The light is perfect, the scene is perfect, and the composition allowed is perfect. When everything comes together to express my true emotions and/or feelings, nothing more needs to be done to convey those feelings in my images.

These moments are few and far between, but on this December afternoon at the White Sands National Monument in Alamogordo, New Mexico, I experienced that moment for the first time in my career. It was late afternoon and the snow white desert sands stretched as far as the eye could see. My companions had disappeared over the dunes and I found myself totally alone with my thoughts and nature.

I had been shooting for awhile when my telephoto lens stopped working for no apparent reason. The sun was beginning to set and I was in total panic. I rushed back to the car to get another lens and discovered that it was locked and my nowhere to be seen friends had the keys.

Fortunately, I had a wide angle lens in my pocket. You have to understand that I had NEVER used a wide angle lens and had NO idea what to do with it and it was only fate that I had it in my possession. As I rushed back to my position, this cottonwood tree appeared out of nowhere. It, of course, had been there all the time, I just hadn’t noticed it. The snow white sand was already beginning to reflect the golden light of the setting sun. In a matter of a very few minutes, everything came together and the result was “Cottonwood” which was also the first time in my career that I thought maybe I had some talent.

PhoDigital Paintings - Impressionistic Photography As I said above, it is rare that nature provides me with an image that truly reflects my emotions and/or feelings at the moment of capture when, in fact, she always presents me with exciting, exhilarating moments no matter that the other elements aren’t present.

It is at times like this that I take “liberties” with reality and present the moment as I saw and experienced it. I do not have a background in art, I’m a CPA in my other full time career, but I have always wanted to paint. For some reason, when I have a brush in my hand, my mind, brush and canvas just don’t meld. It was for that reason that I developed what I call my PhoDigital paintings. Sometimes the result is more traditional and sometimes very impressionistic. “Aspen Spring” is an example.

A few years back, I went to Denver, Colorado to meet my future wife for the very first time. She already knew of my love for nature and photography and was taking me all over the surrounding area to experience Colorado’s special charm. When, late in life, I became aware of nature and all its beauty, I became fascinated with aspens. On this day, Aspen, Colorado was our destination. As we approached Aspen, we came upon acres and acres of these beautiful trees. Fortunately there was an exit right there, so we pulled off and we spent the rest of the afternoon romping around the groves like kids given carte blanche in a toy store.

The time was mid May and in reality, the trees held no color and really didn’t portray the feelings I experienced that day. As they say, necessity is the mother of invention and the result was my developing the PhoDigital painting style. Is it reality? Of course not, but on this day, at this moment in time, it certainly was for me.

Abstract Impressionistic Photography I earlier mentioned my frustration with painting or, rather, my inability to paint with a brush. Quite by accident, I discovered that I didn’t need a brush because I could paint with my lens.

Long before I capture an image, I spend time sitting, watching, becoming aware of the sights, sounds and smells of my surroundings. Rather than forcing the image, I let it come to me. Often I’m captivated by the flow of what I see and I begin by capturing it by breaking the rules of photography and actually moving the camera as I shoot using the lens to capture that flow.

At first, it was slow and deliberate, but as I practiced, I was able to visualize the scene and, in a fleeting moment, take advantage of it. The Excitement Within is an example of such a moment.

It had been a long and exhausting day of photographing Spruce Knob, the tallest mountain in the Alleghenies and the highest point in West Virginia located in the Monogahela National Forest. The sun was setting as I returned to my motel when out of the corner of my eye, I saw rays of sun lighting up the fall colors in the forest. Because of all the foliage on the side of the road, I knew that a traditional photograph was impossible, but I did not want to miss capturing the drama that lay behind the foliage. I hopped out of the car and with camera in hand, I set for a slow shutter speed and “painted” the scene before me, thus portraying “the excitement within.” In addition, I combined this image with another close-up image of tree bark representing the bonding in nature.
